Smashburgers with Onion

Some days I just want a really good burger! I don’t usually have bread or buns in the house but found I can enjoy this American classic without the bun using this method!

First, I mix up a few seasonings. I have tons of spices in my pantry so just blend together whatever I desire. This day, I used salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne and paprika.

In a preheated hot cast iron skillet, I added a little oil and two piles of sliced onion. I then added two hamburger patties on top of the piles of onion.

Using a heavy spatula, I smashed the patties so the onions adhered to the bottom. Then, I seasoned the top of each patty.

Cook for a few minutes and then flip the patties. Look at that goodness! Be sure to season this side as well!

With pepper jack and American cheese in the house, how could I possibly choose just one?

Make a side salad with your favorite hamburger fixings.

Enjoy!

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion sliced
  • 1 tbsp Kosher salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp paprika
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder

  2. Divide ground beef in half and make two round thick patties.

  3. Add oil to skillet and add onions in two piles. Immediately add the patties on top of each pile of onion. Using a heavy spatula, press down on the patties so the onions stick to bottom of patties.
