Beach in a Box

Summer days are behind us but here’s a way to keep the beach close to you all year long!

A few years back my son, Dylan, received one of these cute little boxes from the place he interned.  The day we moved him out of his college condo, I played with this thing more than I helped with the move.  He refused to give it to me (Can you believe that?) but I just had to have one.  So, I decided to make several to give to all the young adults in my family with desk jobs.  Be forewarned young family members with desk jobs that follow this blog, you will be seeing this in your Christmas stocking soon.

To start you will need Kinetic sand found at your local craft store.  It’s so cool, it sticks only to itself and doesn’t make a mess.  One box of sand will make about 8 Beach in a Box sets.  I also bought 2 x 2 inch containers with clear lids from the Container Store.  From your local craft store, try to find a few miniature beach items like the umbrellas, pails and/or seashells.  If you have one of those seashell leis, just take a few from it.  You can find those everywhere.  Or if you live by the beach like me, just go find a few small ones.  The original only had an umbrella in it but I just thought it would be cooler to add a few extra items.  Then, I made some labels with my label maker.

Divide up the sand among the boxes leaving enough room so the pail, umbrella and seashell fit and allow the lid to close well.  (You may need to cut the umbrella stick down a bit to fit into the box.)  Next, add the label on the front of the box if you wish to label it.

Can you see my little sand castle?  So cute and fun!  Of course, I had to play a little, I couldn’t help myself!

Beach days may be over for now but a little summer fun is only a Beach in a Box away!
